'I first heard about the Great War from my Uncle Ted who served with the First Royal Warwickshire Regiment from 1914. One particular episode he related was about his time in Albert, and this has been a haunting memory which drew me back some years ago to the battlefields of the Western Front, where my interest was re-kindled' These paintings were not to glorify what happened but are merely a cameo of the individual lives of the men who went into the hell of war - so many never to return.
K B Hancock is internationally known for his beautiful and tranquil impressionist paintings of France. However, after many years of reading about the Great War, he felt that he wanted to portray to people the poignant, sad, desolate and private moments, as well as the feeling of camaraderie, felt by the ordinary men who volunteered for the image of a 'Glorious Cause'.
In 1993, following a trip to the Western Front and with much help and advice from the Imperial War Museum, K B Hancock produced a collection of nearly thirty such paintings highlighting many aspects of the 1914 - 1918 war. Some have their own beauty, some have tranquility in the quieter moments between battles, but they all portray the individual feelings that are relevant to war.
They were first exhibited at a special evening at the Naval and Military Club (In and Out) in London to coincide with the 75th Anniversary of the Armistice before the collection was sadly split up between individual collectors. A retrospective exhibition was held in Tetbury in May 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of VE day and was attended by HRH The Prince of Wales.
